SAFETEL – Safe Electromagnetic Telecommunications on Vehicles

SAFETEL research project (completes April 2006) aims to improve the robustness of motor vehicles against electro magnetic (EM) disturbances providing advanced tools for prediction, design and testing.

The application of the results will improve the road safety and support the competition of the European automotive industry. SAFETEL is aimed at achieving a higher level of safety than current standards against internal and external EM environment. The Project will define a simulation and test strategy and provide an advanced set of design tools to guarantee the proper functioning of electronic equipment in the presence of new complex receivers and transmitters such as GPS, GSM, Bluetooth and Time Modulated Ultra Wideband.

SAFETEL aims also to the objective of the Transport Thematic Priority, developing production environment specific to surface transport, based on the innovative use of advanced design and manufacturing.

The project objectives are to:

  • contribute to establish new advanced standards and test methods that will help designers produce in-vehicle electronic systems that are better-protected against unwanted signals such as noise and cross-talk.
  • provide increased safety on the roads, assuring more robust vehicles against the EM disturbances in the future.
  • improve the competitiveness of the European automotive and related electronic equipment industry. Using the results of this Project, the European industry will find a better posture against the competition (rapid prototyping, reduced cases of re-working to solve later EMC problem and reduced chance of campaigns of product withdrawal).
  • ensure the co-evolution of technology and applications so that technology advances are exploitable both by the vehicle and by the equipment manufacturers.
  • advance the knowledge and the tools for studying, modelling and testing the Electromagnetic Compatibility of electronic equipment.

The research team includes leading transport industries and automotive research organizations. All the consortium partners are active members of national and international standardization organizations such as CENELEC and ISO.
